Role of Oxytocin in Labor Induction
SOHO #BetterU: Kartini Day

JAKARTA (16/04) – Every pregnant woman must want to have smooth and normal labor. However, in some cases, normal labor process is assisted with induction action, among others by administration of synthetic oxytocin into the body to make labor process easier. Normally, for the birth of the first child, a woman is more likely to be inducted because her internal os of the uterus is not yet formed. His is explained by obstetrician gynecologist of MRCCC Siloam Hospital Semanggi dr. Ardiansjah Dara Sjahruddin, Sp.OG, M. Kes. in a health seminar held by Ethica Industri Farmasi, in Jakarta (16/04). Ethica Industri Farmasi is a subsidiary of SOHO Global Health and has become a joint venture company with a German pharmaceutical company Fresenius Kabi since August 2013. Since 1946, Ethica Industri Farmasi has been focusing on injection drugs.

dr Ardiansjah explained, oxytocin is a hormone that is normally produced from a woman’s body released by pituitary gland that functions to stimulates contraction of the womb during childbirth. When he process of labor occurs, he womb contracts naturally because oxytocin is released normally. However, is contraction does not occur, the doctor assumes that oxytocin in her body is not sufficient, thus the solution would be to administer synthetic oxytocin into her body to stimulate contraction. This process is called induction.

In performing induction, timing is of the essence. dr Ardiansjah gave example, to perform induction to a woman she must already passed certain age of pregnancy (aterm) about 41 - 42 weeks but showing no signs of contraction, then induction can be performed. This way is done as a medical attempt to smooth he process of the baby coming out of the womb normally. Ratio of success of induction by administration of oxytocin ranges 63 - 93%. Recently, there has been an increase in the rate of induction. A study conducted by Coonrod et al found induction rate as much as 20.3%. Even, induction rate in women who have experienced cesarean increased to 38.4% and induction can be performed to women with pregnancy age of 37 – 42 weeks.

Induction is a process of labor that requires high level observation and supervision. This is done to minimize risks arising form induction action. dr Ardiansjah explained, when the womb is forced to contract, the wellbeing of the fetus in the womb is disturbed. The risk that may occur is fetus distress such as abnormal heartbeat. If not carefully and properly monitored, induction can cause contraction that is too strong, which can cause ruptura uteri that will jeopardize the safety of he woman and her child.
